Meet Luffy: The Story of Miaru's Mascot

Every great learning journey needs a companion. Ours is a small golden monkey with a big heart, an even bigger smile, and a tail that always seems to know where the adventure is. Meet Luffy — the mascot, the spirit, and honestly, the heart of Miaru.
Luffy has been with us far longer than Miaru itself has existed. His story spans more than a decade, three very different apps, and one big dream: making learning feel like play. We first told parts of this story in our Medium posts "Miaru's Mascot Luffy" (2023) and "Re-Introducing Luffy, Tales of a Mascot" (2025) — here it is in full, brought up to date.
It started with a camera
Luffy's very first job: the OtakuSnap app icon, over a decade ago.
Luffy was born more than ten years ago as the face of OtakuSnap, an app imagined as an Instagram-style home for Anime, Manga, and Japanese pop culture. The app itself never took off — but something about the cheerful little monkey on its icon did. He hinted at what our founder kept chasing across every project since: the joy of Japanese culture, wrapped in technology, delivered with a smile.
The game hero years
OtakuRun: Luffy dodging giant robots under cherry blossoms and Tokyo Tower.
When OtakuSnap sunset, Luffy refused to fade away. He grabbed the lead role in OtakuRun, an iOS infinite-runner where he sprinted past cherry blossoms, giant robots, and Tokyo landmarks. The game gave Luffy something an icon never could: motion, personality, and that adventurous streak he never lost.
Always running toward the next adventure.
Finding his true calling
From game hero to learning companion.
Today Luffy has found the role he was always meant to play: your guide through Miaru. He celebrates every streak, claps for every breakthrough, and gently nudges you back when life pulls you away. Learning a language is a journey — Luffy makes sure it never feels lonely.
He matters to us for three simple reasons:
- Relatable & fun — a curious little monkey captures exactly how it feels to explore something new, mischief included.
- Cross-cultural — rooted in Japanese pop culture, but made to welcome learners from everywhere.
- Ever-present support — from your first "こんにちは" to your hundredth lesson, he is always in your corner.
Luffy isn't traveling alone
In our 2025 re-introduction we revealed Luffy's first friend: Ai (愛) — pronounced like the Chinese word for "love", and yes, spelled like A.I. on purpose. Ai is the adaptive tutor of the crew: real-time feedback, lessons tailored to your pace, and encouragement exactly when you need it.
Ai (愛): part rocket, part robot, all heart.
Back then, we also teased a mysterious blurred silhouette joining the crew…
The January 2025 sneak peek. Any guesses?
The mystery is over: say hello to Yuko (結煌), the friendly dragon whose name weaves together 結 (connection) and 煌 (radiance). Yuko carries the blazing, majestic spirit of Japanese culture — its festivals, stories, and traditions — and brings learners together around them.
Yuko revealed: the spirit of culture in the Miaru crew.
Together they cover everything a learner needs: Luffy keeps you cheering, Ai keeps you improving, and Yuko keeps you connected to the culture behind the language. You can meet the whole crew on our Meet Luffy page.
Why a mascot, anyway?
Learning should feel this comfortable.
Because education is more than memorizing facts — it's about connection, curiosity, and joy. A mascot turns a grammar drill into a story, a streak into a shared victory, and an app into a friend you look forward to seeing. That's especially true for younger learners, where a familiar face can be the difference between "do I have to?" and "can we do one more?"
Luffy, in his element
Explorer Luffy: packed and ready for the next lesson.
Every small win gets the full celebration.
From an app icon, to a game character, to the face of a language-learning platform — Luffy's journey mirrors Miaru's own: keep going, keep smiling, and never stop exploring. And this is still just the beginning. Curious how it all connects to the person who drew the first Luffy into existence? Read our founder's story: From Speak Ni Wo Ta to Miaru.
